How to find Found Faces + bookreview
Do you ever notice unexpected faces in your surrounding? If not, you will after reading this super cute photography book called Found Faces.
I really love this book! It’s filled to the brim with faces that jumps at you (in a friendly way!), or sometimes slowly emerges as you find eyes and then maybe… is that a nose? Then you see the big smile and you just have to smile back, even though it’s not a real face but an inanimate object! We are wired like that, and the element of surprise is intriguing.
I find this book inspiring, playful, fun and well designed. The photos are taken by over ninety photographers from twenty six different countries.
I also like that not every face is in-your-face obvious but instead a gift from the photographer that saw it and captured it. This idea of “found faces” really makes me want to look for faces everywhere. I’ve already been on several face-hunting excursions, but they are not always easy to spot. After looking through the book I kind of expected to see them everywhere.
These are my first finds, from the gym, this week:
How to find faces
Start by opening your eyes and mind. Then you should be looking for a pair of eyes, then see if there is a mouth, or a nose or both. Then snap a photo and share it! It’s easy, quite addictive and a super creative activity (though it slows you down as you will need to look closely on things you never noticed before)!
Where to look? Take a walk and bring your camera. Start looking at cars and door posts, all kinds of machines are great, as is hand bags, trees, trash cans and kitchen utensils. :-)
I will keep looking for sure!

When you pay attention to your surroundings you may just see something unexpected!
Yup, it’s a super cool photography book. It was sent to me for review by Lark Books who has a series of books called Focus: * Your World, Your Images. You can also check out Focus: Love (found hearts), Focus: Passages (beautiful doors) and Focus: Letters, though I think the coolest must be Found Faces!
* There is also a Found faces flickr group that you must check out, lots of inspiration there! Let me know what you find/see! :-)
* Feel free to check out my previous book reviews too.

oh, what a funny book!
I always find faces everywhere, but never thought to photograph them… good idea for some “photography homeworks” :)
I’ll join flickr group for sure!
I like also the book about hearts: this winter I photographed a pink heart a thread accidentally made on my pincushion. Now is the header of my blog!
I saw the book at my local bookstore and flipped through it. I love finding faces in objects. The ones I easily see are on tree trunks of course. I should start taking photos of my found faces. It would be a fun project.
Sophie
I was interested in your post and fascinated to hear a book has been written on the subject. I’ve been taking photos of ‘faces’ for several years, when ever I see them. They are great fun and you’ve given me the idea to show a couple. If I do I’ll link to your post!
Sandie
Thanks for the “heads” up on this book. It looks really interesting and the concept is really neat.
Nice! I’ve been seeing faces for so long :-)
You can see my pics here and here on my blog!
And thanks for letting me know about this book! :)
Thanks for commenting on this post everyone!
Silvia, can’t wait to see your face photos!
Sophie and Sandie, indeed a really cool photo project to keep in the back of your head when outside taking a walk or while traveling. Let me know what you find!
Seth, haha, yes, absolutely a “heads up” for this one! I love all kind of crazy photographic adventures!
Hagit, wow, I looove your found faces – they are amazing and so funny! Thanks for sharing those wonderful photos from Israel! :-)
This is such a neat idea, Hanna, and will really encourage me to take a closer look at things around me. I am amazed by how many people have commented above that they’ve already been doing this!
Thank you for sharing this book!
What an inspiring project… finding faces :]
I love this idea…this is something I’ve done for years! My recent siting…we live across the street from our community park and we walk there everyday. I see a smiley face on the doggie poo bag dispenser!
