Creating in January | Time-lapse painting video

I captured all the 31 first pages of my Daily Creating adventure in January on video, so that you can take part of the creative process (in a rather rushed time-lapse way)!

I’m really excited to share it with you today.

Daily (almost) Creativity in a little notebook by iHanna - see all time-lapse videos here #artjournaling

I have shared just a few of the time-lapse videos on my instagram, but now I’ve compiled them into a 12 minute long video that is pretty cool to watch…

I do hope you will be inspired by it, and maybe you’ll even try one or two of the ideas I share? They’re just quick, one-sitting, little art exercises that I have enjoyed through the first month of the year.

In my last post I wrote about the Kikki.K 365 Journal, and what I thought I’d do with it. Now I know, and you do too. And I do think this is all very exciting.

I will continue to paint and doodle in my Kikki.K notebook – as long as it feels interesting and good to me. It might be just these two months, or it might be for the rest of the year!

Capturing the elusive Creativity Process on video

So as I’m creating (almost) daily right now, and since I always have my smart phone by my side, I thought it would be fun to film “a few” process-videos in time-lapse mode on the phone, so that you can see what my process looks like. And me too, it’s not often I get to “watch” myself create like this. It’s super strange, and fascinating in a way.

Personally, I love watching these painting time-lapse videos so much. When the first one turned out watchable, I just continued filming, and filming, and filming!

I ended up captured all the 31 first pages of January on camera (!), and compiled them into a 12 minute long video. I’m continuing in February, as those of you following me on instagram (where I’m @ihannas) already know, and I think I’m getting more used to creating on camera. At first I was feeling really stressed about it, but now it’s (a little bit) easier (most days).

I try to limit myself (time-wise) to what I can create in one sitting. Sometimes I’m a little bit too quick to add pen marks on wet paint, just because I don’t want to wait for it to dry while still filming. And sometimes I’ve gone back and added a few strokes after I stopped the recording. It’s okay, it’s all okay.

I mostly wanted to just paint – abstract and playful. But here and there I did a little drawing; self-portrait or flowers for example.

Tools of the Artist Trade - list by iHanna

Materials and tools I use

I promised to share links to the materials I used in this video, so here’s a list to the things I could find right now. Some things, like my Neon Pencils are the no-brand kind that mom bought in Asia, so I can’t really link to that exact pack. I hope you can find something similar where you live, because they’re fun to color with.

Firstly the 365 notebook, like I mentioned in my previous blog post, I couldn’t find this exact notebook even on Kikki.K’s own site, but there are similar ones to be found online. Here’s a link to a 365 Journal by Kikki.K in case you want to check it out. And here’s a similar one with a black cover. There’s also the kind with prompts, like 365 Days of Art: A Creative Exercise for Every Day of the Year for those that often feel more “blank” than creative. ;-)

  • Acrylic paint tubes – I use a lot of differnt brands, but right now I’ve been painting from smaller tubes at home (similar to this set of 24 colors)
  • Pitt Artist Brush Pens by Faber-Castel, still a favorite tool (blogged here)
  • White Gel-pen – the Uniball Signo is a favorite among mixed media artists, give it a try if you haven’t already!
  • Colored pencils (132 pencils by Prismacolor that I wouldn’t mind owning, although the ones I have are okay too)
  • Water-soluble crayons by Caran d’Ache
  • Neon Watercolors from Japan (Kissho Gansai Watercolor Paint LUMI Accent six warm Colors Set)
  • Small watercolor set by Prima (Tropical)
  • Big Watercolor set My Watercolor Tins Palette Paint Case came empty like this one, and is filled with a lot of different brands right now
  • Faber-Castell Gelatos – also water-soluble crayons but in stick-form, that at first I didn’t like but now I love smearing on the page

I’m also using regular mechanical pencils, and other paints and pens, but these were the ones I could track down and recommend for you to try out!

If you have any questions about this notebook (that does not have thick papers, just regular white writing paper) feel free to ask me! :-)
