Sketching on Fabric

Self portrait ATC

Hey curious one… You can sketch with both a pen and a needle. Or you can combine the two methods…

So my latest ATC is a self portrait of sorts. Very much an experiment where I had no idea where it would go or end but just started with a quick idea when I found some fabric pens in my stash. I bought them a few years ago for this kind of experimenting I guess. This is how I started out:

Sketch + detail w embroidery
I made a quick sketch portrait directly on fabric. Sweater sewed on with the sewing machine, and then to the right, a detail of the portrait with hand embroidered accents.

Not sure the embroidery is visible enough, but it was fun doing it. Here is the finished Artist Trading Card:

    yes….sometimes i paint on fabric.

  2. Looks great. I really enjoy the sketch coming through the embroidery, gives it depth somehow. Great Fun!!! xox

  3. Amazing!
I like how paint and thread work together… they blend perfectly, so in the final photo you can barely discerne paint from stitches!
And thread gives “intensity”, expecially to the hair.
    Love love love!

  4. Okay I look at this and go “wow” and know that I will not be able to do this myself… So envious of your wonderful wonderful work!! You are brilliant!!!
