Junk Journal July

Junk Journal July is a simple and straightforward art challenge where you get a word prompt for each day of the month of July. One simple list of words, and then the freedom to do whatever you feel like with those word prompts on your pages.

This speaks to me right now, so I decided to jump in and do this years challenge!

And also, I have done this challenge successfully one year, but I can’t find that I blogged any of the pages although I know I shared a few over on Instagram back then. I absolutely love how full and chunky that traveler’s notebook became as I worked through the challenge!

I’m already halfway through the DIY Traveler’s Notebook junk journaly style notebook I choose to work in, but today I’m sharing a flip-through video of the “blank” junk journal I was considering as well as the one I ended up using. I hope it inspires you to jump in as well. I filmed it last week, but didn’t find time to edit it until now.

I’m including the prompts as provided by Meg on instagram, below, for reference. I have printed a copy of them for myself and glued it to the first page of my junk journal : the spark to start – done!

Here’s today’s video now:

Video: finding a notebook for Junk Journal July – a flip-through of two of my handmade traveler’s notebooks and a bit of talking about what a “junk journal” is or isn’t…

I love the notebook I choose for the challenge, and my hope is to have it filled at the end of the month. But… we’ll see.

I want to fill all the notebooks

In May I was really gearing up to do Tammy’s art challenge ICAD (Index Card a Day), but then as soon as the month started I got 100 % derailed by myself and never even started. It’s a fun challenge that you can do every summer in June and July, but it was obviously too much for me as I’m just barely getting into my Art Journal right now.

And I really have been trying to make more art journal pages, filling altered books with collage and acrylic paints, so in that spirit, I’m joining the JJJ challenge. It’s just for a month I thought, and even if I don’t manage to do all the prompts I know I’ll get play time, I thought. I’ll fill pages and enjoy myself, and that’s what I want for me.

What do you want for you this month/during the summer days when it comes to art & craft?

Let me know, I’d love to encourage you along.

Junk Journal July Inspiration

  • Prompt List 2024 can be found on Meg’s instagram, where she writes: “#JunkJournalJuly is a free month-long challenge to inspire you to create in your junk journal. Get creative by following the prompts each day with a supportive community and show up to your journal. You can use the prompts with other types of journaling too! Start where you are and use what you have.”
  • Meg Journals, the inventor and prompt provider of Junk Journal July is on instagram and youtube and I really enjoyed her video No-Sew Journal tutorial, where she’s creating an accordion journal using the idea of “franken pages”. Note to self: try this idea!
  • The Playlist of Junk Journal July Collaborator videos is also worth checking out if you need some inspiration and/or company while you create! I haven’t watched these yet, but I might put it on as I’m creating a few more pages later today.

Have you done this challenge or have you been tempted to start? It’s not too late to start today or any day in the future.

Just enjoy your journaling and jump in. That’s what I’m doing.

  1. Those are such pretty journals!
Best of luck with Junk Journal July. I’ve always been curious about junk journaling, but I’ve never tried it myself. Maybe I’ll have to give it a go!
